Let's make sure we are all thinking the same thing when we discuss Search Engine Optimization or SEO. Most website owners want their website to list at the very top or have the highest ranking in Google, Yahoo, Bing or any of the other search sites. SEO/Search Engine Optimization will allow a website (when done properly) to list at a higher result than websites that don't focus on proper SEO/Search Engine Optimization. Now that we are speaking about the same thing, lets take a deeper look at how SEO/Search Engine Optimization works for a typically website.
First Things First
If you have a website, you'll need to spend time on SEO/Search Engine Optimization. If you're like most, you have spent time to make your website presentable. Now it's time to drive traffic to your website so everyone can see your website. You may sell products or act as a nonprofit organization. Regardless of what your company or organization does, if you want your audience to find you online then SEO/Search Engine Optimization is a must.
How it Works
Ok, first to understand what SEO/Search Engine Optimization is let's use a hypothetical example for our own website. We want our website to come up first on the search lists in Google so that our potential customer is brought to our www.widgets.com website. Let's use the search engine Google to find our website. Say you have a website named; www.widgets.com. This company is located in the Bay Area of California. They sell gold platedwidgets. When a potential customer searches on Google for a widget they will type in keywords. The more keywords that they type in the more they will narrow down their search and look for something general or very specific. If your website places these keywords within the website than you will be found by Google. The key is to be the very first listing in Google so we make it easy for our audience members to click on your website link and come to our website.
Better Search Results in Google
Now that we know that we want our website to be first or near the top of Google website searches, how can we make this happen. It's all about placing the keywords in our website at the appropriate place and with as many occurrences or densities as we can before we abuse Google's keyword search policies. You see, Google and the other search engine websites do not publish their search formulas for increasing your websites search ranking. Let say you put the words "widget" or "bay area" or "gold plated" hundreds, no thousands of time on one page at your website. That would not be right and Google will eventually find out and they can remove you from their primary search website and as a penalty, not allow your website from being shown any where near the first page when searched. You will have done more harm than good for your website.
Proper SEO/Search Engine Optimization
Google and the other search websites have hundreds of pieces to their formulas or algorithms. When factored together they allow your searched website to be ranked good, better, best. Best allows your website to appear at the top spot on page number one for search results.
Keyword Density & Positioning
Let's go back to our example. Gold plated, widgets in the Bay Area. As a general rule we'll want to have approximately 10% densities of our favorite keywords in our website. That means for every one hundred words we will want to populate the words gold, plated, widgets, bay area within our copy (or code) in our website 10 times. We'll want to have the words in our "Page Titles", our URL's (this is where the website address is visibile near the top of the browser. And the list continues.
Now to fully understand how interesting SEO/Search Engine Optimization can be, you'll need to know that Google and the others will not tell you how they'll rate your website when you do a search. They won't tell you how many times to put the word Bay Area in the website. They won't tell you to put the word Bay Area in the Page Title or to put the word Bay Area in the URL. The general consensus is that if you're a larger company with more resources than you'll have an unfair advantage over a smaller company concerning final placement in their search engine.
It's All About the Code
Now code is where the action really is. You see Google isn't concerned about what the page looks like the way you and I are. It only looks at the code. Let's take a look at what Google really sees when they search your website.
